How To Easily Moderate Your Blog Comments

All blog are going to attract spam comments, that is the sad reality, and if you have nothing in place then brace yourself for literally thousands of the annoying little buggers to flood your blog.

But why wait for this to happen? There are a few things that you can do that will not completely eradicate them, but will severely reduce the amount and make dealing with the remaining ones a lot less of a headache.

1. Use Plugins

Akismet is the best plugin to use to defend yourself against spam comments. I have found that installing this free plugin has actually cut my spam comments down by about 80%. It takes less then five minutes to set up as well.

In conjunction with Akismet I also use GASP (Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin) which forces the commentator to tick a box and thus seems to hinder the bots. Again this plugin will take less than 30 seconds to set up.

2. Do They Have An Avatar?

The majority of spam comments will come from bots who do not have an avatar associated with their profile, this makes it easier to weed out spam comments. Now, there are spam comments posted by human people that will have an avatar, so you might want to tread carefully that you don’t delete legitimate comments.

3. Use Disqus or Facebook Comments

You could always use a third party commenting platform such as Disqus or Facebook to use for commenting as they will force users to sign-up before they are allowed to leave comments and pretty much all bots will run for the hills.

Do you use any other techniques to reduce spam on your blog?
