2 Quick Basic SEO Tips for WordPress Beginners

Writing fantastic content is just half the battle when running a blog, you need to get people to visit your blog to read the content and the best way of doing this is by optimising your site so that it shows up near the top of search engines.

If you are a new blogger the world of SEO can be a scary and intimidating place (and it still is to someone like me who has been blogging professionally since 2007!) and although you can find lots of help via Google most of it isn’t worth printing off and wiping your bottom with it.

So to help you get started here are two quick methods that I use which I believe will help you on your way:

1. Install an SEO Plugin

There are a number of plugins available that can help make your blog more SEO-friendly and one of them that I highly recommend is WordPress SEO by Yoast, I have yet to come across a plugin that is more in-depth than this and his website walks you through what every field means.

2. Change the Permalink Structure

When you first install WordPress you will find that your posts have a URL like www.yourdomain.com/?p=123 which, let’s be honest, is rubbish for establishing your posts in search engines. Thankfully there is an easy way to fix this, simply change to the ‘Post Name’ option which is most common and will dramatically increase your SEO results.

Go ahead and give these two methods a go and let us know if they have worked for you.
